Magic City Media founder Carlos Miller knew he was destined to be a photojournalist the morning after Hurricane Andrew ravaged Miami in 1992. At the time, Miller was a college student at Florida International University majoring in print journalism. Using the cheap point-and-shoot camera he kept in his car, he ended up taking several rolls of film of the destruction and despair left in Andrew’s wake, learning that in some cases, a photo tells a better story than an article.

Miller’s photos first got published in 1997 when he began his newspaper career at a small newspaper in southern New Mexico after returning from a two-year stint in Europe. He continued taking photos with his articles after moving on to the Las Cruces Sun-News, where he worked out of a one-man bureau near the border, often traveling into Mexico to take photos and report on stories. And he continued taking photos at the San Bernardino Sun and The Arizona Republic, becoming known as a reporter/photographer - a rarity in today’s newspaper industry.

He has a unique eye for composition and a knack for capturing spontaneity, whether it be a subtle emotion on a man’s face or a violent outburst from a police detainee. He is quick and aggressive and not afraid to move in close to his subjects. He works well in chaotic situations.

But he also finds photos that others miss. From the weathered old man playing violin for pennies to the buzzing bee on a nearby flower.

Miller is a bilingual Colombian-American who was born and raised in Miami. He has no problem communicating with the various ethnic and cultural groups in Miami, and he is comfortable photographing them. He is well aware of the city’s history and issues.

Miller has used Canon EOS cameras throughout his professional career and is very fond of his growing collection of Canon L series lenses. He is a member of the National Press Photographers Association as well as several online photography groups.
